Overview
This is seasonal/temporary (6 months) clerical work with the Property Appraiser in Miami-Dade County. Employees in this position work according to well-defined procedures and methods established with the office. Assignments in this class may include the operation of typewriters, adding machines, scanners, computers, and other standard office equipment for which no previous training is required. Detailed instructions and close supervision are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments, but routine assignments may be performed more independently, and some initiative and judgment are utilized as experience is gained. Work is subject to close supervision.
Required Skills and Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Key Responsibilities
- Sorts and files material alphabetically, numerically, and by other predetermined categories; withdraws material from files upon request and keeps a record of materials removed. Makes simple posting of various clerical, fiscal, and other records and computer data available from records according to standard procedures.
- Opens, sorts, and distributes mail. Assists taxpayers by answering questions concerning assessments, exemptions, tax billings, and related matters; compiles necessary records for review with the taxpayer and requests field checks, if necessary; compiles and verifies specific information.
- Assists the public with filing the homestead and related exemption applications; explains established legal provisions and determines if these requirements are satisfied, referring questionable cases to supervisors; files exemption applications for those who qualify but are confined to home, hospital, or nursing facility.
- May act as receptionist or desk clerk; answer routine questions regarding departmental activities; direct callers to proper places based on their business requests and assist the public in preparing routine forms and statements.
- Completes simple forms, reproduces records by a copy machine, and computes per diem or other fees and posts dockets. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of business, spelling, and arithmetic. Knowledge of various established departmental procedures for processing property appraisal records in the area of assignment. Ability to learn assigned clerical tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed routines. Ability to follow established departmental procedures with accuracy and appropriate attention to detail. Ability to maintain roster, logs, record cards, and other records completely and accurately. Ability to meet and deal tactfully with property owners, business/corporation representatives, and the general public.

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
Requires the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Ability to read, speak, write, and understand English to effectively communicate with customers and employees by telephone, in written form, or face to face.
- Ability to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, telephone, and similar office machines.
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Attends work regularly at the designated place and time. Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
