The Prep Cook plays a crucial role in the kitchen by ensuring that all ingredients are properly prepared and ready for use by the culinary team. This position supports the smooth operation of the kitchen by handling tasks such as washing, chopping, and measuring ingredients, as well as maintaining cleanliness and organization of the prep area. The Prep Cook contributes to the overall quality and efficiency of food preparation, enabling chefs and cooks to focus on cooking and plating dishes. Attention to detail and adherence to food safety standards are essential to prevent contamination and ensure a safe dining experience for customers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks such as chopping and lifting.
  • Prior experience in a kitchen or food preparation role is preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a professional kitchen or food service environment.
  • Familiarity with kitchen equipment and tools such as slicers, mixers, and knives.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask effectively.
  • Knowledge of various cuisines and ingredient preparation techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare ingredients by washing, peeling, chopping, and measuring according to recipes and instructions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the prep station and kitchen work areas throughout the shift.
  • Assist chefs and cooks by providing prepped ingredients in a timely manner to support efficient meal preparation.
  • Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a safe and hygienic kitchen environment.

Skills:

The Prep Cook uses knife skills daily to efficiently and safely chop, slice, and prepare ingredients according to recipe specifications. Attention to detail is critical to ensure portion sizes and ingredient quality meet kitchen standards, which directly impacts the final dishes served. Time management skills are essential to prioritize tasks and maintain a steady flow of prepped ingredients to the cooking team, especially during busy service periods. Communication skills help the Prep Cook coordinate with chefs and other kitchen staff to understand preparation needs and report any issues promptly.
