SUMMARY

The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the month-end close process, general ledger reconciliations, cash management, reporting, and compliance functions. This role ensures the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial reporting while providing support to property management and internal teams. The Accounting Manager will lead and coordinate a team of accountants, review financial statements, and propose process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Staff Management & Leadership

  • Supervise accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
  • Coordinate workflow among accountants to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Review financials prepared by accounting staff and propose corrections or improvements as needed.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that supports accuracy, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Perform periodic reviews to confirm that accounting staff are adhering to company accounting policies and procedures.

Accounting Month End Closing

  • Participate actively in the month-end close process, ensuring Gross Potential Rent (GPR) reconciles accurately across all properties.
  • Provide coverage for accountants during absences or when support is needed, ensuring properties are closed timely and accurately.

General Ledger and Balance Sheet Reconciliations

  • Ensure that accounting staff maintains proper documentation to support all balance sheet schedules and balances.
  • Verify that subsidiary ledgers reconcile to the corresponding trial balance accounts.
  • Ensure that escrow accounts are reconciled and tie to debt service statements.

Reporting

  • Prepare and review monthly financial reports in accordance with established deadlines and requirements.
  • Analyze financial reports and provide clear variance explanations.
  • Distribute reports as required by owners, servicers, trustees, and investors, as needed.
  • Prepare the annual audit package and assist staff with audit package preparation.
  • Develop schedules, reports, and reconciliations as required by auditors.
  • Draft financial notes, debt service schedules, and tax/insurance schedules for the annual budget.

Cash Management

  • Cash management - monitor cash positions to ensure adequate funds available.
  • Review and approve check run.
  • Prepare cash flow distribution worksheets and ensure accuracy prior to submission.

Other Duties

  • Assist in the design of internal controls, and draft policies and procedures to document them.
  • Delegate data entry tasks to the accounting staff
  • Serve as the liaison between Property Management and Accounting teams to ensure clear communication and timely handoffs.

EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or a minimum of 5-8 years’ experience in a property management / real estate development environment or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Possess an understanding of the accounting cycle. Capable of meeting deadlines. Ability to work well both individually and as a team player. Able to form good working relationships with subordinates, peers, and property managers.
