Job Summary
The Purchasing Manager is responsible for leading all procurement activities, maintaining optimal inventory levels, managing vendor relationships, and ensuring the cost-effective and timely acquisition of goods and supplies. This role is critical to ensuring supply chain efficiency, profitability, and supporting sales growth through strategic purchasing aligned with the Merchants Market organization.

Essential Functions

  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate procurement staff to drive operational efficiency, professional growth, and compliance with company procurement policies.
  • Identify new purchasing opportunities, negotiate favorable pricing and programs, and manage the procurement process from initiation through completion.
  • Provide training and guidance to procurement staff on researching, evaluating, and establishing profitable vendor relationships.
  • Build and maintain strong vendor partnerships to maximize financial returns, leverage collective purchasing power, and uphold ethical business practices.
  • Oversee the co-op program, ensuring purchases are accurate, profitable, and executed in a timely manner.
  • Administer the Blue Ridge Procurement system, including training, system oversight, and continuous improvement of processes.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain management, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of five years of procurement experience, preferably within the food distribution industry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Unipro Food Service programs and systems.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements within food distribution.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing procurement strategies that improve margins and operational efficiency.
  • Proven experience negotiating directly with vendors and securing favorable terms.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in an office environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds as needed.
