Position Summary
The Cox Science Center and Aquarium is seeking a hands-on Exhibit Technician to support the daily operation, maintenance, and technical functionality of interactive exhibits and related technology systems. This role ensures that all exhibits are operating safely, reliably, and effectively to deliver an engaging guest experience.
The Exhibit Technician will perform daily exhibit checks, troubleshoot and repair mechanical and technical issues, assist with exhibit development and installation, and provide on-call technical support as needed. This position requires flexibility, technical aptitude, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative exhibits team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Conduct daily inspections of exhibits to ensure proper operation, safety, and guest readiness
· Troubleshoot, repair, maintain and refurbish interactive exhibits, computers, and networked systems
· Assist in the development, installation, and ongoing support of computing and network services for the Center
· Participate in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of end-user services and integrated technology initiatives
· Assist with new system development, upgrades, enhancements, and improvements to existing systems
· Provide problem resolution and on-call technical support for computer and network systems, including weekends and evenings as needed
· Maintain a working knowledge of current and emerging technologies relevant to exhibits and interactive environments
· Perform routine maintenance of existing exhibits and recommend improvements or new additions
· Assist in the development and design of new exhibits and exhibit components
· Adhere to all Center policies, procedures, safety standards, and best practices
· Perform other duties as required to support the Exhibits & Design department and the mission of the Center
Qualifications
· High School diploma or equivalent required
· Certification or completed coursework in computer technology or a related field
· Minimum of three (3) years of relevant technical experience
- Ability to safely and effectively operate hand tools, power tools and perform basic painting and finishing tasks.
· Knowledge of current technological developments and trends in computer systems and related technologies
· Demonstrated strong organizational, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
· Excellent oral, interpersonal, and customer service communication skills
· Ability to communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and the public, both in person and by phone
· Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet simultaneous deadlines
· Demonstrates tact, courtesy, enthusiasm, sound judgment, and professionalism
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
· Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including exhibit floors, workshops, and public spaces
· Must be able to lift, move, and carry objects weighing 80 pounds or more, with or without reasonable accommodation
· Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, and working with tools and equipment
· Full-time schedule with required availability on weekends, evenings, and on-call as needed to support exhibit operations
