Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) to join our team. The ideal candidate is a dedicated, reliable, and enthusiastic professional with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality veterinary care and client service. This role involves working closely with veterinarians to provide exceptional medical, surgical, and dental care to our patients while educating clients and supporting the entire hospital team.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Nursing:
- Provide skilled and compassionate nursing care to in-hospital patients, including administering fluids, medications, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
- Monitor and record patient vital signs, weight, and general condition.
- Provide emergency first aid and assist in stabilizing emergency cases.
- Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, employing fear-free techniques to reduce patient stress.
Anesthesia and Surgical Assistance:
- Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures, including proper aseptic preparation of the surgical site.
- Induce and intubate patients for anesthesia.
- Safely administer, monitor, and adjust anesthesia during procedures, and oversee patient recovery.
- Assist the veterinarian during surgical procedures by maintaining sterile conditions and passing instruments.
- Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment.
Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging:
- Collect and prepare laboratory samples (blood, urine, feces) and perform in-house diagnostic tests.
- Prepare and submit samples for outside laboratory analysis.
- Obtain diagnostic images such as radiographs (X-rays).
- Understand and follow all safety protocols for handling and processing diagnostic images.
Client Communication and Education:
- Obtain patient medical histories from clients and accurately document all findings.
- Educate pet owners on patient status, treatment plans, medication administration, and proper at-home care.
- Ensure clients have a thorough understanding of their pet's condition and all medical recommendations.
- Communicate professionally and with empathy during all client interactions, including sensitive topics like euthanasia.
Administrative Duties and Hospital Maintenance:
- Maintain accurate and meticulous electronic and/or paper medical records.
- Assist with stocking supplies, maintaining equipment, and keeping exam rooms and treatment areas clean and organized.
- Help with answering phones, scheduling appointments, and filling prescriptions as needed.
Qualifications:
- Certification: Active Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) in Florida is required.
- Education: Graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary technology program.
- Experience: 1+ years of experience working as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and standard veterinary procedures.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in venipuncture and IV catheter placement.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in veterinary practice management software. Training is provided.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform frequent bending, stooping, crouching, and walking.
- Must be able to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 40 pounds on your own and over 40 pounds with assistance.
- May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, animal feces, and potentially dangerous or contagious animals.
