Job Summary
The Director of Safety is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic design, execution, and continuous improvement of SkyHop Global’s enterprise safety programs. This role partners across the organization to build and sustain a strong, consistent safety culture aligned with SkyHop Global’s core value of Safety.
The primary objective of this position is to proactively prevent accidents, reduce operational risk, and protect SkyHop’s people, clients, and brand. The Director of Safety provides executive oversight of safety policy, driver compliance, training, audits, incident investigation, and safety technology across all station locations. This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer as an individual contributor and does not include any direct reports.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Administration
- Drive, influence, and support SkyHop Global stations by conducting regular safety assessments and on-site evaluations of safety programs and practices
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs, policies, and procedures to minimize and prevent accidents and unsafe conditions
- Design and maintain systems to capture and analyze safety and incident data to proactively manage safety performance
- Maintain safety metrics and documentation and serve as the corporate point of contact for station leaders and Leaders on Duty
- Develop and implement best practices, training updates, and policy adjustments to align with local, state, and federal safety regulations
- Develop, lead, promote and/or implement employee safety initiatives and programs
- Develop annual operating planning and corporate governance processes, including audits, compliance initiatives, government reporting, and identification of best practice initiatives
- Ensure DOT compliance through policy oversight, station audits, and corrective action follow-up
Safety Training
- Develop and implement new hire and annual driver safety training programs
- Ensure safety training is completed prior to first-time driving and annually thereafter
- Lead behind-the-wheel and operational safety instruction in accordance with corporate and client standards, including defensive driving, passenger safety, emergency procedures, and equipment use
- Ensure training materials are current and training completion is properly documented
- Mentor leaders on safety processes and best practices and conduct periodic manager and supervisor training sessions
Driver Compliance
- Observe routing transportation activities to assure compliance with established safety requirements and regulations
- Oversee Driver Qualification reporting, including MVR reviews, DOT physicals, license expirations, and compliance notifications
- Monitor driver behavior and vehicle data through safety technology platforms
- Oversee vehicle inspection programs and ensure all reported faults are tracked, addressed, and documented
- Handle DOT complaints under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR)
- Drive safety culture by setting expectations, reinforcing accountability, and requiring participation in safety programs
Safety Incentives / Rewards
- Oversee corporate safety incentive and recognition programs
- Calculate and distribute monthly and quarterly safety rewards
- Track and report on incentive program effectiveness
Safety Technology
- Actively seek out, test, and implement new innovative technology solutions to enhance safety compliance and increase accountability
- Support adoption and training related to new safety tools
- Ensure safety technology data is monitored and used to reduce future incidents
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years’ experience in safety leadership, preferably within transportation, fleet operations, or regulated environments
- Proven ability to design and improve safety programs and drive cultural change
- Strong organizational, analytic, and strategic-thinking skills with demonstrated ability to create, implement and monitor complex plans, and translate those plans into goals and concrete methods and strategies
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Strong knowledge of DOT regulations and transportation safety standards
- Must possess SkyHop Global leadership characteristics; including but not limited to, customer focused, innovative, strategic thinker, accountability, and a team-player
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and competing priorities
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at times
- Ability to travel to station locations on a routine or as needed basis
- Requires 24-hour availability in the event of an emergency
