Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Director of Accounting with a CPA and a minimum of 5 years of experience in managing the financial operations for a travel agency or cruise line. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing the company's financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance. This role requires a strong understanding of the unique financial challenges in the travel and cruise industries, as well as the ability to lead and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of financial processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Oversee the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow reports. Provide insights and strategic recommendations to senior leadership based on financial performance.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop, manage, and maintain annual budgets and forecasts. Regularly update projections based on actual financial results and changes in the travel/cruise market.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Ensure the company's financial operations are in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards. Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard company assets and improve financial accuracy.
- Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals. Provide guidance, training, and performance evaluations to ensure high-quality work and professional growth.
- Revenue Recognition & Cost Allocation: Oversee the proper accounting for revenue streams, including ticket sales, packages, ancillary services, and partnerships. Ensure compliance with applicable revenue recognition standards.
- Financial Audits & Tax Filing: Coordinate the external audit process and prepare required documentation for tax filings. Ensure all filings are completed accurately and on time.
- System Improvements & Automation: Identify opportunities to improve accounting systems and processes to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and streamline workflows, particularly in the travel and cruise industries.
- Stakeholder Communication: Collaborate with senior management and other departments (e.g., Operations, Sales, Marketing) to provide financial insights and recommendations that support business decisions. Communicate financial performance to key stakeholders clearly and effectively.
- Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on trends, regulations, and challenges within the travel and cruise industry that may impact accounting practices and company finances.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA certification required.
- Experience: At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with a focus on financial management within the travel agency or cruise line industry. Experience with the unique accounting complexities of these industries (e.g., multi-currency, deferred revenue, commission structures, and travel-related taxes) is highly preferred.
- Leadership Experience: Proven track record of managing and developing a team of accounting professionals. Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, etc.) and MS Excel. Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools is a plus.
- Knowledge: Strong knowledge of accounting principles, GAAP, financial regulations, and industry best practices. Understanding of revenue recognition standards (ASC 606) and tax regulations related to the travel and cruise industry.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex financial data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights for business decision-making.
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of financial reporting and analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Previous experience in a senior accounting or finance role within the travel or cruise line sector.
- Experience with multi-national accounting practices and multi-currency transactions.
- Familiarity with financial software or tools specific to the travel or cruise industries.
