POSITION SUMMARY:

The Plant Operations Mechanic - Generalist is responsible for maintaining and repairing the hospital's building systems, equipment, and infrastructure to ensure a safe and efficient environment. This position requires a well-rounded maintenance professional with hands-on experience in plumbing, electrical, HVAC support, carpentry, and painting. The ideal candidate is a problem solver who can work independently, respond to maintenance requests efficiently, and perform quality repairs without the need for constant supervision.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • - Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • - Conduct repairs and replacements on fixtures, doors, flooring, ceiling tiles, and general building components.
  • - Patch and paint walls, ceilings, and trim, ensuring a professional finish and maintaining hospital appearance.
  • - Assist with preventive maintenance tasks such as filter changes, inspections, and minor equipment servicing.
  • - Diagnose and repair minor plumbing issues, including leaks, clogged drains, and fixture replacements.
  • - Repair and maintain air handlers, exhaust fans, patient beds, and minor HVAC components (not requiring licensed expertise).
  • - Maintain grounds and outdoor areas, including irrigation system support, walkway maintenance, and exterior upkeep.
  • - Use hand and power tools effectively to complete assigned tasks.
  • - Follow all safety regulations, infection control protocols, and hospital policies to ensure a compliant work environment.
  • - Respond to emergency maintenance issues such as leaks, electrical failures, and equipment malfunctions.
  • - Work independently and prioritize tasks efficiently while supporting team projects.

Lifting Requirements Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to safety use manual tools and power equipment common in the construction trades

CUSTOMER SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs duties and conducts interpersonal relationships in a manner designed to project a positive image of the department and the hospital. Works with supervisor/manager and other members of section or department to promote a harmonious work environment. Ensures that all contacts with patients, the public, physicians and other hospital personnel are carried out in a friendly, courteous, helpful and considerate manner. Answers telephones in a prompt and courteous manner. Displays concern and provides assistance or explains procedures as appropriate to callers or in face-to-face situations. Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers. Works with customers to identify problem areas and recommend solutions.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS (including required licenses/certifications, education and job knowledge/experience):

Education & Experience

  • - High School Diploma or GED (Required).
  • - 2+ years of hands-on experience in facility maintenance, commercial building repair, or a related field (Required).
  • - Experience in painting, carpentry, plumbing, and general mechanical repairs (Preferred).
  • - Healthcare, hospitality, or commercial building maintenance experience (Preferred but not required).
  • - Must be proficient in English (spoken & written)

Skills & Competencies

  • - Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose maintenance issues efficiently.
  • - Ability to work with basic plumbing, electrical, and HVAC components.
  • - Experience in wall patching, sanding, and painting for professional interior maintenance.
  • - Proficiency in using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • - Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • - Basic computer skills for work order management and maintenance tracking.

No formal certifications required, but trade experience in HVAC, plumbing, or electrical work is a plus.
