Summary

This senior-level underwriting position works closely with Underwriting leadership, Product Management, Claims, Marketing, Actuarial, and Information Technology departments to ensure programs and processes align with the corporate strategy. The Senior Commercial Underwriter is capable of underwriting highly complex business with limited support and has thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and governance.

Note: This is a hybrid position that would require attendance at our St. Petersburg, FL office.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists in setting the underwriting direction of American Coastal Insurance Company in all states in which the company does business.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation, and monitoring of all underwriting rules, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Conducts renewal underwriting to ensure acceptability of risks and to improve the performance of the book of business.
  • Collaborates with Product Management on development of new products and programs.
  • Collaborates with Claims on resolution of coverage issues and adverse risk development.
  • Collaborates with Marketing to communicate company underwriting policies to the field.
  • Analyzes wholesaler book of business on semi-annual basis for potential profitability actions and reviews, communicates with Sales leaders.
  • Participates in cross-departmental projects, including audits and user acceptance testing.
  • Mentors and educates less-experienced underwriters and underwriting assistants.
  • Fosters a culture of innovation, transparency, and accountability within the department and between department and others in the organization.

Requirements:

Education/Licensure: Bachelor’s degree preferred. Professional designation/coursework (AIM, AINS, AU, AIC, ARM or CPCU) preferred.


Experience: Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in Commercial residential property underwriting.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job may be acceptable in lieu of the Education and Experience requirements listed above.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal expertise, including use of tact, patience, courtesy, and collaboration.
  • Demonstrable computer application skills including Microsoft Office Suite of programs and the ability to learn various internal and/or proprietary software packages.
  • Microsoft Excel experience: intermediate skill level.
  • Strong understanding of insurance products, financials, policy systems and service requirements.
  • Effective use of office machinery such as photocopiers, printers, and scanners.

Physical Requirements

  • Position typically requires reaching, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Sedentary Work: The duties most often are considered Sedentary Work include exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
