POSITION SUMMARY:

The Kitchen Assistant will assist the Food Service Manager in preparing and serving nutritious, well-balanced meals for campers and staff as well as maintaining high standards of cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dishwashing area. The position will work on-site at Camp Kateri in Hawthorne, FL from May 31, 2026 to July 3, 2026.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Helps to prepare and serve all camp meals as directed; assist in preparation of food as menu indicates, including washing, chopping and peeling.
  • Assists in routine sanitation of the kitchen and related equipment, including washing dishes, cleaning equipment and maintaining sanitation of food preparation and storage areas.
  • Performs routine duties, to include but not limited to dish washing and kitchen clean-up, plating and portioning food as directed, and assisting with service during meals.
  • Assists in the preparation and packaging of food for use outside of the dining hall.
  • Ensure awareness, and sensitivity and diligence of campers’ food allergies or special diets.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions as needed.
  • Assist with the opening and closing of the entire camp.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Be a currently registered member of Girl Scouts of the USA or willing to bec01ne a member.
  • Be at least 15 years of age.
  • Be willing to live in a camp facility near campers.
  • Have training and/or experience working in food service.
  • Have good time management, organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to clear a Florida Department of Law Enforcement Level II fingerprint / background screening and drug screening.
  • Believe in the mission of the Girl Scout movement.
  • Good character, integrity, adaptability, patience, sense of humor, and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision and relate to one's peer group.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy, standards, program, and syste1ns.
  • Experience and demonstrated sensitivity in working with people from various ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.
  • Excellent communications skills; excellent facilitation, conflict resolution, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and polite in stressful situations.
  • Must be driven, self-motivated, and a strong leader to inspire staff and girls.
  • Strong interest in working with youth and teens.

  1. Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions
  2. Sufficient visual acuity to make appropriate judgments regarding Girl Scout materials.
  3. Physical ability to frequently stop, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, pull, lift, and move objects up to 50 pounds at shoulder height, and occasionally lift in excess of 50 pounds.
  4. Demonstrated normal depth perception.
  5. See and read printed materials, with or without visual aids; distinguish colors; read and understand rules and policies, labels and instructions.
  6. Verbal communication including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels.
  7. Other demands, as determined by the employer.
