Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Comptroller to join our team at a Non-Profit Charter Middle School. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting and financial management, particularly within the non-profit sector. This role is crucial for ensuring the financial integrity of our organization, overseeing all accounting functions, and providing strategic financial guidance to support our mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management:
- Develop, manage, and monitor annual operating budgets in coordination with school leadership.
- Accurate and timely accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
- Coordinate with external auditors and oversee annual audits.
- Assist with grant budgeting, reporting, and compliance.
- Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard school assets.
Human Resources Management:
- Administer payroll and employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave policies.
- Maintain employee records in compliance with federal and state laws.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes.
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and school HR policies.
- Assist school leadership with performance management and employee relations.
- Serve as a liaison between staff and benefits providers.
- Manage employee handbooks, HR policies, and personnel documentation.
Operations & Compliance:
- Ensure proper documentation and compliance for state and federal education grants.
- Collaborate with school leadership on strategic planning and operational decisions.
- Assist in procurement and vendor contract management.
- Support risk management and insurance processes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or Finance (Master’s preferred)
- CPA is a plus.
- 3–5 years of experience in financial management, preferably in a school or nonprofit setting.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, payroll, and HR laws.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and HR/payroll systems.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to the mission of public charter education.
Working Conditions:
- Office environment within a school setting.
- Occasional evening or weekend hours for school events or reporting deadlines.
- May involve limited lifting or physical activity related to office management.
