Accounting Manager – Affordable Housing, Property Management
Position Summary
The Accounting Manager supports and assists the Chief Financial Officer with monthly close, budgeting, audits, and cash management while providing end-to-end oversight of payroll operations and compliance for a multi-entity environment.
Key Responsibilities
CFO Support & Core Accounting
- Help lead the month-end close activities: journals, account reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis; prepare timely, accurate financial statements.
- Assist with annual budget development, rolling forecasts, cash flow projections, and board-ready reporting packages.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and grant/contract monitoring; track remediation of findings and maintain internal control documentation.
- Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and system controls in alignment with GAAP and funder requirements.
- Manage AP/AR review, fixed assets, prepaid/deferrals, and ensure clean GL and audit trail.
- Support preparation and submission of quarterly and annual financial/budget reports to external agencies.
- Support budget imports and annual updates in RealPage financial system.
- Partner with operations, HR, and program teams to resolve accounting issues and support decision making.
Payroll
- Review pre- and post-payroll reports and exception registers; reconcile payroll to the GL and bank statements each period.
- Verify authorized employee changes (new hires, separations, pay/position changes), overtime, differentials, and paid time off accruals against approved documentation.
- Oversee payroll tax, benefit and retirement plan deductions, and garnishments.
- Administer and optimize integrations among timekeeping/HRIS, payroll, and accounting systems; maintain earnings/deduction codes and GL mapping.
Qualifications (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (4-year degree).
- MBA, CPA, or CMA (candidates preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls, payroll compliance, and GAAP fundamentals.
- High integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail; strong communication and service mindset.
- Process improvement/automation exposure (e.g., close checklists, reconciliations, workflow tools).
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations) and comfort with data imports/exports.
Qualifications (Preferred)
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience including general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close.
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, reconciliations) and comfort with data imports/exports.
- Experience in nonprofit, property management, affordable housing, or grant-funded environments.
- Hands-on payroll oversight experience across multi-department or multi-location organizations.
- Proficiency with accounting systems (RealPage) and HRIS/payroll platforms (ADP).
