We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Junior Staff Accountant with expertise in both multi-state sales tax and general state compliance filings. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with a strong understanding of the regulations required to keep a multi-state business in good standing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: (tasks to achieve the accountabilities)

  • File and remit multi-state sales tax returns accurately and on time.
  • Stay current on sales tax regulations, rates, and filing deadlines for each state where the company has a nexus.
  • Respond to sales tax inquiries and resolve discrepancies with state tax authorities.
  • Manage and optimize Avalara sales tax compliance software.
  • Manage and file annual reports, biennial statements, and other required corporate filings for all states where the company is registered.
  • Track and maintain state-specific business licenses and permits, ensuring timely renewals and compliance.
  • Maintain an organized calendar of all state-level filing deadlines to ensure all submissions are completed accurately and on time.
  • Keep up to date on changes to state regulations that could impact the company's registration or reporting requirements.
  • Assist in the foreign qualification process as the business expands into new states.
  • Prepare and file personal property tax returns with relevant local taxing authorities (counties, municipalities).
  • Respond to personal property tax assessment notices and assist with any related audits.
  • General accounting functions, including assisting with accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Communicate with vendors, customers, and state authorities as needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the management team.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with multi-state sales and property tax filings and state-level business compliance filings (e.g., annual reports).
  • Proficiency with NetSuite accounting software or similar ERP systems preferred

SKILLS:

  • Exceptional attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

EDUCATION:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Bookkeeping or accounting certification is a plus.
