Position Summary:
The Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day financial management of the firm. This role combines hands-on financial statement preparation while executing the strategic vision that will play a key role in transforming the department while leveraging technology and developing financial dashboards. The ideal candidate will have experience in professional services, preferably Architecture & Design, Engineering, or Construction and a solid understanding of project-based accounting.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor the accounting team.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, marketing and admin to support financial transparency and goals.
- Develop and implement systems that leverage technology to create efficient workflows for the accounting department.
Project Accounting
- Track and report on project profitability, ensuring alignment with budgets and contracts.
- Collaborate with project managers to ensure timely and accurate invoicing.
- Monitor project performance metrics and alert leadership to budget or profitability issues.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Generate ad hoc reports, dashboards for leadership as needed.
- Oversee cash flow management, ensuring sufficient liquidity for operational needs.
- Manage project accounting, including tracking budgets, billable hours, costs and variance analysis.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and other applicable accounting and tax standards.
Software & Systems
- Manage accounting software along with other integrated platforms.
- Utilize data analytics to support financial oversights and project analysis.
- Recommend and implement process improvements and efficiencies.
Compliance and Audits
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including tax filings.
- Coordinate and manage governmental annual audits and respond to auditor inquiries as needed
- Maintain records and systems in compliance with document retention policies.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 10+ years of progressive Accounting experience, preferably within an Architecture/Design firm, Engineering firm, or with a General Contractor.
- Strong knowledge of project-based accounting systems.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in project-based accounting software (e.g., Deltek, Unanet, or similar).
- Strong working knowledge of data analytics tools for financial project reporting.
- Experience in processing payroll and preparing payroll accruals.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with team members, clients, vendors and non-financial staff.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
