Overview
The Referral Coordinator plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by managing patient referrals to ensure seamless transitions between care providers. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong organizational skills and a deep understanding of medical terminology and coding practices. The Referral Coordinator will work closely with healthcare professionals, patients, and insurance companies to facilitate efficient referral processes while adhering to HIPAA regulations. This position is ideal for individuals looking to contribute positively to patient care through effective coordination of healthcare services.


Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate patient referrals to specialists and other healthcare providers.

  • Contacting patients, contacting offices or insurance companies to assist in patient care coordination

  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for referred services.

  • Maintain accurate medical records and documentation related to referrals.

  • Assisting the front office team as back up when needed.

  • Utilize coding systems such as ICD-10 and ICD-9 for proper billing and record-keeping.

  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding their referral status and appointment details.

  • Collaborate with medical office staff to ensure timely processing of referrals.

  • Ensure compliance with managed care protocols and HIPAA regulations.

  • Assist in the training of new staff on referral processes and medical office procedures.

Skills

  • Proficiency in medical coding, particularly ICD-10 and ICD-9.
  • Proficiency with Athena EMR is a plus
  • Strong understanding of managed care systems and medical records management.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and office procedures within a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact effectively with patients and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Experience:

  • Referral Coordinator: 1 year (Required)
  • Insurance verification: 1 year (Preferred)
