JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Mechanic

Schedule: M-F (standby Saturday rotation), 12pm-9:00pm

Pay Range - $25-$30/hour

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Repairs and maintains delivery trucks, trailers, and other mechanical equipment. Maintains cleanliness of garage area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist drivers with small mechanical problems that may arise when leaving yard to make deliveries.
  • Run road calls to complete repairs on the road, if necessary.
  • Observes and listens to trucks and other equipment in operation to determine malfunction and to plan work procedures. Also conducts fleet check weekly on all fleet equipment including checking mileage, fluid levels, belts, tires, leaks, and cab inspection.
  • Drives repaired trucks or other vehicles to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Repairs forklifts, floor sweepers, pallet jacks, chargers and batteries, and other mechanical equipment as needed.
  • Performs preventative maintenance (PM's) on trucks and equipment by checking oil, water, and transmission fluids each Monday. Determines if repairs need to be performed by outside company, with approval from Fleet Director, and schedules repair work.
  • Inspect tires, DOT inspections and general appearance of vehicles and correct any problems.
  • Keeps current registrations and insurance cards in all vehicles.
  • Examine refrigeration units on weekly basis and make any necessary repairs to electrical and diesel operation as needed.
  • Collects Vehicle Condition Reports (VCR's), repairs any problems identified, and files paperwork according to retention policy (three months).
  • Enters PM's and DOT inspection information into Tatum's system, and ensures entries are kept current.
  • Reports all accidents and equipment damages to Director of Fleet Operations immediately.
  • Records mileage of vehicles on a monthly basis.
  • Maintains checklist of all repairs made on each truck and keeps accurate equipment files.
  • Keeps service truck stocked sufficiently to facilitate road calls.
  • Maintains parts inventory and operable safety equipment in vehicles.
  • Always keeps garage in clean working order.
  • Assists outside tire vendor on yard fleet inspections.
  • Performs regular maintenance on forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Logs maintenance and repairs in shop software.
  • Promptly processes all invoices.
  • Drives a tractor trailer to other company facilities, as needed.
  • Assists Warehouse Manager with facility maintenance, as needed.

  1. Performs any additional duties and special tasks assigned by the Director of Fleet Operations.

  • Regularly required to move around tight, low areas when repairing trucks and other equipment.
  • Able to adeptly use hand and air tools, including wrenches, drills, and grinders.
  • Able to occasionally move up to 75 lbs.

Educational/Vocational/Previous Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-6 years of mechanical experience desired.
  • Valid Class A Commercial driver's license required.
  • ASE certification desired.
  • Technical Certifications in the following: A/C and Refrigeration, preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Warehouse environment.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes, or airborne particles, chemical or other toxicants, dusty conditions, outside weather conditions, and machinery with moving parts.
  • Some possible exposure to loud noise and vibration.
