Job Introduction

Employees in this class are responsible for supervisory and administrative work involving the management of operations, programming and/or maintenance of a group of parks or special use facilities, such as recreation centers, art studios, athletic complexes, or aquatic facilities.

Nature Of Work

Under direction, an employee in this class is responsible for the efficient supervision, operation, programming and/or maintenance of assigned parks and recreation facilities within the overall Parks and Recreation system, serving a group of neighborhoods, conservation areas, urban relief areas, and/or major parks and related facilities.

Work is of more than average difficulty and requires considerable initiative and independent judgment, tact, and courtesy.

Work entails extensive contact with the public, volunteers, and community organizations. This position requires knowledge of community needs and how to service those needs efficiently and effectively, and the ability to establish strong relationships.

Employees are required to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and special events.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Team Supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and results achieved.

Examples of Duties

Plans, organizes, and coordinates programming and/or maintenance operations; ensures compliance with standards; promotes community participation.

Assigns, schedules, trains, supervises, and reviews the work of subordinates; completes performance evaluations; administers discipline; recommends hiring, promotions, and transfers; responds to grievances; interprets rules, regulation, policies and procedures for staff; plans and conducts staff meetings.

Ensures compliance with applicable safety, maintenance and programming practices and standards. Coordinates the provision of resources including supplies, tools and equipment.

Creates and promotes a team atmosphere within the department. Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of: appropriate practices, methods, and techniques of parks and recreation maintenance and/or programming.

Skill in: verbal and written communications.

Ability to: Supervise staff, maintain records, prepare reports, and coordinate services.

Physical Requirements

Primarily field work with occasional sedentary office work.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associates degree in parks and recreation administration or a related field, and five (5) years of experience in the planning, delivery, and/or administration of Parks and Recreation programs and services, including aquatics or aquatics maintenance, parks maintenance, horticulture, special events, athletics, or athletics maintenance, gymnastics, dance, rowing, and marina operations; including at least one (1) year of progressively responsible supervisory work experience.

Or

An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required

First Aid, CPR certification within six (6) months of employment

Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certifications preferred

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
