Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

A K-12 school in Fort Myers, FL is seeking a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support students in developing independence and safe navigation skills. This contract position within the school year offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children with visual impairments by providing specialized instruction and guidance.

Responsibilities include:

• Assessing students orientation and mobility needs and developing individualized instruction plans
• Teaching safe travel techniques, including cane skills and use of assistive technology
• Collaborating with educators, families, and other specialists to ensure a comprehensive support system
• Monitoring progress and adjusting strategies to meet evolving student needs
• Maintaining detailed records and participating in team meetings

Qualifications:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) preferred
• Experience working with children in K-12 educational settings
• Strong knowledge of mobility aids and adaptation techniques for visually impaired students
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to work with diverse student populations and tailor instruction accordingly
