Job DescriptionJob Title: Paving Foreman
Craft: Paving
Reports to: Superintendent
Exempt Status: Hourly (non-exempt)

Position Objective/Description:
In addition to hands-on participation, provides direct supervision and coordination for asphalt paving crew on major civil construction projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage crew members to perform asphalt paving tasks in the process of completing construction projects along with equipment and materials needed for each project.
  • Monitor paving operations for proper depth, yield, cross slope and density and ensure that all specifications and project requirements
  • Ensure proper layout of the project from contract drawings to ensure efficiency and quality Standards are met
  • Maintain time and materials records necessary to complete daily records
  • Coordinate and schedule trucks and equipment to jobsite
  • Calculate asphalt quantities and contacts asphalt plant to schedule delivery of material
  • Maintain crew safety and enforces company policies.
  • Study project specifications with project superintendent to plan procedures for paving operations.
  • Observe assigned equipment to detect machinery malfunctions. Operates machinery to verify repair.
  • Establish safe work environment that complies with OSHA standards and company safety program.
  • Comply with federal, state and company environmental policies.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to read and accurately interpret construction drawings, blueprints and plans.
  • Thorough knowledge and proven skill working with all phases of asphalt paving operations
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in highway and road construction
  • Detail oriented
  • Team player – willingness to work with others
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to manage others, get jobs completed on time.

  • Demonstrate a safety-first attitude with strict adherence to safety policies and procedures.

  • Efficient at multi-tasking and working under short time constraints


Physical Demands:

  • Constant physical effort, including extended standing and sitting for at least 8 hour shift
  • Intermittent walking and standing on a construction site.
  • Climb intermittently
  • Regularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch to perform duties
  • Regularly reach above shoulder level
  • Regularly push/pull objects
  • Must be physically able to repetitively lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 pounds occasionally, and sometimes heavier weight.
  • Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadiness
  • Able to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment.
  • Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach and grasp with hands and arms.
  • Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination
  • Good vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus


Education / Experience:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Five years’ experience working in asphalt and paving operations
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience supervising paving crews, preferably asphalt
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record


Work Environment:
Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Frequently works near heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances found on construction site such as oil, grease, gasoline, concrete and diesel fuel. Periodically exposed to fumes, lubricants, airborne particles and dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
