SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs routine tests in medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results. Assists with phlebotomy as needed in clinic to draw specimens for lab processing.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in performing automated Hematology and preparing manual Retic count.
- Prepares tests and evaluate new reagents or controls.
- Maintains a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Prepares blood samples for send out to reference laboratories.
- Greets patients, in person or on the telephone; answers or refers inquiries.
- Prepares patients for the health care visit. Including vitals (height, weight, BP, etc.), past medical history, and reason for visit/chief complaint when coverage is needed.
- Obtains blood specimens from patients by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed and/or requested when coverage is needed.
- Maintains phlebotomy area in orderly and safe condition.
- Exhibits a high degree of courtesy, tact, and poise when interacting with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Follows, and enforces standards and procedures; complies with legal regulations.
- Responsible for lab pickups and drop-offs within NCH departments on campus, including but not limited to Radiology, NCH lab, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of recognized training program in phlebotomy, six months to one-year related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems and policies is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Other skills required:
- Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
- Bilingual skills a plus.
