Overview

This is the job description for a Lead Process Mechanical Engineer to spearhead the design and development of process mechanical systems for water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role involves leading technical deliverables from concept through final design, ensuring integration of process requirements with robust mechanical solutions.


Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Design Leadership

• Lead the comprehensive development of water and wastewater treatment process and plant designs, focusing specifically on the mechanical implementation of the process.

• Drive process equipment sizing and selection, including pumps, mixers, tanks, valves, and other mechanical unit operations, ensuring compliance with specified process requirements.

• Perform and review hydraulics calculations for treatment facilities to optimize pumping, piping, and open-channel flow efficiency.

• Lead the generation of core documentation, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and detailed project specifications and equipment data sheets for mechanical equipment and systems.

2. Project Quality and Standards

• Lead the 3D Plant design efforts and manage the comprehensive review of project deliverables at the 30%, 60%, and 90% engineering milestones.

• Ensure all mechanical designs, equipment selections, and specifications comply with relevant industry codes and standards, including AWWA, ANSI, and ASME.

• Maintain a working familiarity with instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems to ensure seamless mechanical/electrical integration.

• Actively contributes to the development and enhancement of engineering standards and best practices for mechanical design within the department.

3. Interdepartmental & Mentorship

• Interface effectively with Project Managers to maintain project scope, schedule, and budget targets.

• Collaborate closely with Procurement to support vendor selection and equipment purchasing activities.

• Consult with Operations staff to ensure designs are practical, maintainable, and meet operational needs.

• Mentor and guide junior engineers in process and mechanical design principles, calculations, and standards.



Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

• Extensive experience spanning over 8 year in water and wastewater treatment plant design, with a strong focus on mechanical and process equipment integration

• Proven expertise in the application of AWWA, ANSI, and ASME Codes as they apply to water and wastewater treatment infrastructure.

• Demonstrated ability to lead the development and review of PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layout, GA drawings and mechanical specifications.

• Strong technical background in hydraulics calculations and pump selection.

Education and Certifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering (or a closely related field).

• Registered Professional Engineer (PE) License or able to obtain within a year in a relevant engineering discipline is preferred.

• Experience with leading 3D design reviews is strongly desired.



Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

• This position requires up to 25% travel to project sites, and other corporate offices for coordination and design reviews.

• Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs (18 kg) occasionally as part of handling components, inspection activities, or during site visits.

• Work involve periodic exposure to industrial environments, fabrication shops, and construction sites requiring use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
