Job Description

The Water Well Driller Helper assists the Well Driller and drilling crew in all phases of commercial, industrial, and municipal water well construction, maintenance, and repair. This is typically an entry-level position that involves significant physical labor, working outdoors in various weather conditions, and assisting with the setup, operation, and maintenance of the drilling rig and associated equipment.


Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Drilling Operations Support

  • Assist in the safe and accurate set-up of the drilling rig, equipment, and ancillary gear.
  • Load and unload vehicles with essential supplies, such as drill rods, casing, bits, and other materials.
  • Assist the Driller in the operation and tooling handling for the drilling rig.
  • Operate equipment such as pumps for air, water, and drilling fluid, front-end loaders, and forklifts (training may be provided).
  • Dig mud pits for drilling spoils as required.
  • Select and attach drill bits and rods, adding or changing them as hole depths increase.
  • Assist in the installation of well casings, well screens, gravel pack, cement grout, and well heads.

Site and Equipment Management

  • Maintain the cleanliness and stock of the crew truck, equipment, and work area.
  • Perform routine mechanical maintenance work on the drilling rig, mud pumps, vehicles, and other equipment under the Driller's supervision.
  • Ensure all loads are properly secured on vehicles for transport.
  • Clean and disinfect water wells in preparation for use.
  • Operate and fill the water truck.
  • Record depths and gallons per minute (GPM) on work orders per the Driller's instructions.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all company safety standards, personal protective equipment (PPE) policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in safety meetings and hazard assessments.
  • Maintain current knowledge of state codes for well construction, including isolation distances and grouting requirements.
  • Complete required paperwork, such as vehicle mileage logs, daily reports, and well logs.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • A high school diploma or GED is typically required.
  • Strong work ethic and mechanical aptitude.
  • Crane operation experience is a plus
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50-75 lbs) frequently.
  • Comfortable working outdoors year-round in various weather and often in remote locations.
  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record is essential.
  • CDL Class A or B License with air brake, tanker, and HAZMAT endorsements is a plus
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and subject to random testing.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
