Works with Foreman, Skilled and Unskilled Laborers, Subcontractors

Status

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT - Summary

Schedule, coordinate and supervise multiple work crews, major work scope/area/type and/or subcontractor activities, including all trades involving Bridge or Road Construction projects.

Type A: Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience in Bridge or Road Construction technology, methods, and equipment, tools and work procedures required.

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT - Specific Responsibilities

Project Schedule

  • Ensures all utility locate tickets are submitted and maintained
  • Management of project housekeeping and curb appeal. Ensures all trash is picked up weekly and crews clean up after themselves daily.
  • Ensure all crews are always starting work timely (7:00am) and crews are working diligently until end of the shift. Ensure crews take proper snack/lunch breaks throughout the day.
  • Manages SWPPP for the project.
  • Documents project conditions and productions using daily reports, project photos, and overhead video footage
  • Manages all foremen on the project by scheduling their work and delegating to them specific tasks each day.
  • Monitors project right-of-way limits to ensure all work stays with our legal boundaries.
  • Conducts weekly Foreman Meeting with Team.
  • Bridge or Road Construction Foremen and crew coordination experience preferred
  • Drafts Work Plans and communicates expectations for the work to the applicable crew or subcontractor

Technical

  • Communicates issues in the field to the project management team so that RFI, Change Orders, and Claims can be submitted. Assist in the pricing of change orders or the documentation of schedule impacts. Ability to provide backup documentation to submit RFI.
  • Analytically strong, making sure that math or science supports every decision they make; ability to use Excel, Google, AutoCAD, and technical literature to break down a problem to root cause and make recommendations for action
  • Able to produce sketches to better communicate problems, solutions, or identify items that need clarification.
  • Writes clear and concise emails to the project team and client.

Schedule

  • Assist in compilation of the 3 week schedule look aheads. Confirm durations and start dates with subcontractors and foremen to ensure we publish realistic and achievable schedules
  • Achieves deadlines on time or early; if deadline will not be met on time, communicates to supervisor prior to the deadline providing status and requesting a specific time extension.
  • Schedules crews, equipment, subcontractors, and outside truckers to achieve schedule milestones.
  • All delays to the schedule are documented to the Project Team and Manager.
  • Requests lane closures and coordinates the MOT crews for the project.
  • Bridge or Road Construction Scheduling Experience preferred

Equipment

  • Ensure all Equipment requests are made with a minimum of 48 hours notice and ensure that the amount of time needed for the equipment is being projected accurately.
  • Maintain less than 30% Standby Equipment on the Project. Standby Cost/Total Equipment Cost.
  • Ensure equipment is scheduled and equipment moves are coordinated; report equipment damage within 12 hours of occurrence and holds the responsible person accountable for their negligence.
  • Tracking and maintenance of small tools for your crew, and ensures small tools are protected and secured daily.
  • Ensures all Operators are performing their daily equipment inspection reports
  • Management of all heavy equipment on the crew, including taking photos and inspection immediately upon arrival on the job, proper fueling and greasing, and safe use without abuse.
  • Maintaining clean company trucks for himself and his crews as well as cleaning equipment as required to best represent MCM to the marketplace and ensure it is well taken care of.
  • Bridge or Road Construction Equipment Coordination Experience preferred

Material

  • Takeoff quantities and coordinates material acquisitions timely to maintain production.
  • Ensure all Material requests are made with a minimum of 72 hours notice on an MRF and ensure that the material is being projected accurately and timely.
  • Ensure all Delivery tickets are being delivered to the Project Engineer within 24 hours of receipt, and proper notes/cost codes regarding location and use of materials are put on tickets.
  • Reports any potential Material Overruns, or materials that need to be ordered again due to damaged, etc, so they can be documented by Project Manager.
  • Ensure all materials delivered to the project site, are properly stored, and secured for potential theft or loss.

Subcontractors

  • Coordinates work between subcontractors to create productive work areas for all, minimizing conflicts between subcontractors and documenting the condition of the area when one finishes and prior to the next subcontractor taking over
  • Analyze truck needs using cycle and load/unload time analysis to ensure compliance with project budgets.
  • Bridge or Road Construction Subcontractor Coordination.

Survey

  • Request survey a minimum of 48 hours in advance for all survey needs and requirements.
  • Maintain a basic knowledge of surveying, including layout practices and equipment operation.
  • Ensure that the work is installed per survey layout (elevation and location) and asbuilt for accuracy prior to the next trade of definable feature of work commencing

Safety

  • Establishes & Maintains a SAFE, organized, clean and productive work site. Knowledgeable with safety requirements and enforces MCM Safety Standards.
  • Assists with Weekly Safety Meetings.
  • Report all incidents (Theft, Injury, Altercation, Reprimands) to Safety Manager immediately.
  • Ensure the Safety Task Planner are performed and submitted every day to the Project Team.

Quality

  • Ensure that all Q/C requests are provided timely and with advance notice per the requirements set forth in the contract documents. Ensure that all work is tested and/or inspected by the QC department prior to covering it up or moving on to the next item of work.
  • Report all Rework to the Project Manager immediately, identify the cause and the lessons learned. Minimize rework and punchlists by planning completely and striving to do work right the first time.

Heavy job

  • Allocates equipment hour usage to the appropriate cost code, highlighting whether it was active or idle, on a weekly basis using GPS reports and equipment department utilization reports.
  • Review all daily diaries to ensure foreman's descriptions are accurate and they are being submitted by 9am the following day.
  • Review all Time Cards daily and ensure that the Foreman are submitting them by 9am the following day. Ensure all Production Quantities, Notes, Cost Codes, Hours, Equipment, Labor, etc are accurate.
  • Reviews Daily/Weekly Cost Analysis reports for accuracy.

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT - Corporate Involvement

  • Maintain respectful relationship with owners and their representatives/inspectors doing everything possible to provide customer service that exceeds their expectations.
  • Team builder: able to effectively manage people so that bickering, gossip, and complaining is kept to a minimum; open to all members of the project to share their concerns; seen as a fair leader without favorites, and successful at inspiring his team to build excellence.
  • Ability to performs peer and subordinate performance evaluations, providing fair and frank evaluation of individuals performance using constructive positive evaluation and constructive criticism in order to provide recommendations for individual's professional improvement. (Review of prior year's developmental Goals, Goals to individually set for upcoming year)
  • Participates regularly in continuing education, personal training, and professional improvement to continually improve to continue growth with MCM.
  • Other Duties as assigned

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT - Skills/Knowledge

  • Read and understand drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Understand Means and Methods, Safety, Quality, Equipment, different trades to perform necessary tasks.
  • Bridge or Road Construction.

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT - Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced understanding of construction scheduling, cost control.
  • Ability to control, and supervise large group’s essential.
  • Four (4) year College degree preferred.
