Job DescriptionSUMMARY: Seeking an experienced Hematology/Oncology APRN to support our brain tumor and sarcoma/solid tumor programs on the Nicklaus Children’s Campus. Under indirect supervision and working interdependently with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers, provides a broad range of nurse practitioner services following established policies and protocols. Performs a variety of functions and technical procedures necessary for patient admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and outcome evaluation. Participates in performance improvement, research, and educational activities. Assists physicians with clinical documentation. Supports inpatient daytime coverage as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Takes initial patient histories and performs physical examinations.
  • Initiates, documents, and communicates the plan of care and follows up to ensure complete screening and preparation of patients.
  • Assists Hematology/Oncology attendings on seeing consults/procedures on hospital floors when needed (including the NICU, PICU, and ED)
  • Assist attendings with multidisciplinary rounds
  • Writes orders for medications, laboratory work, and diagnostic tests.
  • Interprets laboratory and test results.
  • Provides education and continuity/quality of care guidance to rotating pediatric residents on floor
  • Upon discharge, notes discharge summaries, prescriptions, and any referrals on patient charts.
  • Informs patients of the necessary post-discharge care instructions.
  • Provides teaching and emotional support to patients and families.
  • Triages and refers patients for further care based on severity of illness and symptoms.
  • Utilizes written guidelines/protocol for clinical decision making and management.
  • Prepares timely, legible, and complete documentation of all patient care as provided by law, regulation, and established policy.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of and sensitivity to patient/family rights.
  • Applies safety principles as identified by established policy.
  • Participates in continuing education to continually improve skills and abilities and stay abreast of current technologies/practices.
  • Ensures compliance with legal issues including but not limited to patient confidentiality and risk management; ensures compliance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Exhibits a high degree of courtesy, tact, and poise when interacting with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Adjusts to fluctuating peaks in patient flow, acuity, and other operational demands while maintaining quality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Florida, required.
  • Current BLS certification, PALS certification required.
  • Two to four years nursing experience in a hematologyy/oncology setting strongly preferred.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Demonstrated competence in reacting to and handling emergencies.
  • Able to work collaboratively with multiple health professionals in a busy and complex environment using tact, diplomacy, and discipline.
  • Strong charting/documentation skills.
