Position Summary
The Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for utility construction projects, including electric, gas, water, and telecommunications infrastructure. This role requires strong technical knowledge of utility construction methods, materials, and industry standards. The Estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, field supervisors, and clients to develop competitive bids and ensure project profitability while maintaining compliance with company policies and safety standards.
Requirements:
Essential Responsibilities
- Review and analyze project plans, specifications, and related documents for utility construction projects.
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates, including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and overhead.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field supervision to ensure accuracy and feasibility of estimates.
- Conduct quantity take-offs using drawings, specifications, and field data.
- Develop and maintain databases of unit pricing, production rates, and cost histories for utilities projects.
- Prepare bid packages, proposals, and presentations for clients.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, and client consultations as needed.
- Track and evaluate change orders, project addendums, and scope adjustments.
- Maintain awareness of current market conditions, supplier pricing, and industry trends.
- Ensure estimates comply with all company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
- 3–5 years of estimating experience in the utility construction industry (electric distribution, gas, water, or telecommunications).
- Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., HeavyBid, HCSS, Trimble, Bluebeam) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Strong knowledge of utility construction methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Ability to read and interpret utility construction drawings and specifications.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Work Management Systems (WMS) and/or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Familiarity with unit-based estimating for utility construction.
- Prior field experience in utility construction operations.

Work Environment
