Dental Assistant

Position Summary

The Dental Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered dental care within a community health center environment. This position assists dentists and dental hygienists in providing comprehensive oral health services, ensuring adherence to infection control protocols, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for patients of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Support & Care

    • Welcome, prepare, and seat patients, ensuring comfort and addressing concerns.

    • Provide clear instructions on oral hygiene practices and post-treatment care.

    • Support outreach and education initiatives that promote community oral health awareness.

  • Clinical Assistance

    • Assist dentists and hygienists during examinations and procedures, including instrument handling, suctioning, and material preparation.

    • Take, develop, and mount dental radiographs in compliance with state regulations.

    • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) system.

  • Infection Control & Safety

    • Sterilize and maintain dental instruments, equipment, and treatment rooms.

    • Adhere strictly to OSHA, CDC, and community health center infection control standards.

    • Monitor and document sterilization logs and safety compliance checks.

  • Administrative & Operational Support

    • Assist with appointment scheduling, chart updates, and patient flow coordination.

    • Verify insurance eligibility and assist patients with understanding benefits, if required.

    • Maintain dental supply inventory, place orders, and ensure proper storage.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited Dental Assistant program preferred.

  • State-specific certification and licensure for dental radiography required.

  • CPR and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain upon hire).

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including underserved and vulnerable communities.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Creole) strongly preferred.
