Job Overview

We are looking for an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to become a key part of our team. The right candidate will have solid mechanical skills and hands-on experience working with industrial equipment used in commercial racetrack maintenance. This position focuses on maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing various machinery to keep operations running smoothly and safely. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be essential in supporting day-to-day field operations and ensuring equipment is fully operational and compliant with safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform regular maintenance and mechanical repairs on a wide range of equipment used in racetrack operations, including tractors, skid loaders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues using hand tools and welding methods when needed.
  • Ensure all equipment used for maintaining racing surfaces is operating at peak performance.
  • Inspect equipment regularly to detect wear or potential issues and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Keep detailed logs of service, repairs, and inspections performed on each piece of equipment.
  • Help onboard and guide junior staff or new hires on safe equipment operation and best practices.
  • Inspect engines and equipment regularly, perform scheduled services, and carry out both preventive and corrective maintenance on all racetrack machinery.
  • Troubleshoot and repair diesel and gas-powered equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on tractors, harrows, mowers, water trucks, and equipment.
  • Ability to order and keep the shop stocked with parts and materials.
  • Conduct thorough performance checks on trucks, loaders, and other machines essential to dirt, Tapeta, and turf surface care.
  • Use hand and power tools effectively across all stages of equipment diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.
  • Identify the necessary tools and replacement parts for each repair and ensure timely sourcing.
  • Weld or fabricate parts as needed to restore equipment functionality.
  • Carry out routine cleaning, lubrication, and basic service procedures to extend equipment life.
  • Maintain and service machine attachments, including drags, water tanks, rollers, and blades.
  • Document and report any malfunctioning or damaged equipment to supervisors promptly.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily activities of junior mechanics or maintenance assistants, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship in proper equipment handling, diagnostics, and repair techniques.
  • Monitor adherence to safety protocols and maintenance standards among the team.
  • Assign and prioritize repair tasks based on urgency and operational needs.
  • Conduct routine checks on completed work to ensure quality and compliance with organizational expectations.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  • Proven experience in welding and basic fabrication
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience working with diesel-powered and heavy-duty machinery
  • Familiarity with gas and diesel vehicle maintenance
  • 5+ years of experience with hydraulic systems and preferred pumps
  • Technical certification or formal training in diesel mechanics or schooling is a strong plus
  • Experience in welding and fabrication preferred.
  • Diesel Mechanic or Heavy Mechanic certification.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risks associated with travelling between buildings and back and forth to other areas as may be required due to business demands. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, including second-hand environmental smoke. The employee may be exposed to the risks associated with attempting to resolve issues with extremely irate or difficult guests or staff members. The noise level in the work environment varies from light to moderate.

Licenses, Certifications, Registration: Requires a State of Florida Professional PMW License. Requires a valid Florida driver’s License.
