Job Summary:

The Recreational Therapist plans, develops, and implements therapeutic recreation programs designed to meet the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of residents. This position differs from the Activities Assistant by focusing on individualized treatment plans, evidence-based interventions, and specialized programming to improve residents’ quality of life and functional abilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conducts resident assessments to determine recreational needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Develops and implements individualized and group therapeutic recreation programs, including exercise, art, music, games, outings, and other interventions.
  • Documents assessments, care plans, progress notes, and outcomes in compliance with facility policy and state regulations.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to integrate recreation therapy into overall care plans.
  • Adapts activities to meet varying functional levels, including residents with dementia, mobility limitations, or sensory impairments.
  • Provides training and guidance to Activities Assistants as needed.
  • Monitors resident participation and adjusts programming to maximize engagement and therapeutic benefit.
  • Maintains safe environment and ensures proper use of equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to assess resident needs and design appropriate therapeutic recreation interventions.
  • Strong knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles and methods for older adults.
  • Ability to motivate and engage residents with varying physical and cognitive abilities.
  • Competence in documenting care plans and progress notes.
  • Must have knowledge of Residents’ Rights and always respect these rights.
  • Must have knowledge of and practice appropriate safety and injury-prevention measures.
  • Must have knowledge of and practice applicable infection control techniques.
  • Must attend relevant in-service education programs and other informational meetings.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field preferred.

Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred, or eligibility to obtain certification.

Experience in senior living, long-term care, or healthcare setting strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods standing, walking, and facilitating programs.

Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.

Ability to assist residents with mobility or activity participation, including squatting, bending, and lifting.
