English Teacher (Grades 7–12) – Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School

Dedicated to Inspiring 21st-Century Thinkers

Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School (FLPS), a family-oriented private institution committed to advancing academic excellence and individualized, supportive learning, is seeking a dynamic and highly effective English Teacher to join our faculty for Grades 7–12. If you are passionate about bringing diverse literature to life, cultivating advanced writing skills, and mentoring students in a personalized learning environment, we invite you to find your place with us.

What You'll Do: The Meat of the Role

As a vital member of our Middle and Upper School academic team, you will be responsible for far more than teaching the curriculum—you will be shaping lifelong learners. Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Curriculum Design & Delivery: Design and lead rigorous, engaging English Language Arts courses from the foundational Middle School level through advanced Upper School electives, including Honors and potential preparation for AP/AICE or college-level coursework.
  • Advanced Skill Development: Focus on developing advanced analytical skills in literary criticism and mastery in various forms of expository, narrative, and argumentative writing, preparing students for university success.
  • Personalized Instruction: Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including supporting our diverse population of International Students and students within our Supportive Learning Environment.
  • 21st-Century Integration: Strategically integrate contemporary digital tools and media literacy into your lessons, ensuring students are proficient in research, presentation, and communication technologies.
  • Character & Citizenship: Actively foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that aligns with the FLPS mission of promoting strong character, ethnic diversity, and productive citizenship.
  • School Community: Collaborate closely with colleagues on cross-curricular projects, serve as an advisor, and potentially lead or sponsor an extracurricular activity or club (e.g., Debate, National Honor Society, Yearbook).

What You Need: The Core Ingredients

We are seeking a candidate who is not only qualified but is a true fit for our family-oriented and dedicated educational culture.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, Literature, Education, or a closely related field.
  • Certification: Current State Teaching Certification (or documented plan/eligibility to obtain certification immediately upon hire).
  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of successful experience teaching English/ELA to adolescents (Grades 7-12), preferably within a college-preparatory or independent school setting.
  • Pedagogical Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices in ELA instruction, diverse text selection, curriculum mapping, and standardized assessment development.
  • Commitment: A deep-seated passion for working with teenagers and a commitment to individualized student mentorship and character education.

Why Join the FLPS Family?

  • Impactful Mission: Be part of a school that truly focuses on recognizing each student as a unique individual and fostering excellence.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work within a tight-knit, supportive faculty environment where collegiality and collaboration are prioritized.
  • Professional Growth: Opportunity for ongoing professional development funding and dedicated time for curriculum refinement.
