Position Summary
The OR Circulator Nurse is a licensed professional responsible for managing patient care and coordinating the surgical environment from outside the sterile field. This role is a vital part of the surgical team, ensuring patient safety, maintaining a sterile environment, and facilitating the flow of the surgical procedure. The Circulator Nurse acts as a patient advocate, documents care, and anticipates the needs of the surgical team to ensure a successful outcome.
Essential Job Functions
Patient Advocacy & Safety:
- Greet and identify patients, confirming their identity, the surgical procedure, and the consent form for accuracy.
- Perform pre-operative assessments and ensure all necessary documentation, including lab results and physician orders, are complete before the patient enters the operating room.
- Ensure the patient is safely positioned on the OR table to prevent injury and provide a comfortable and secure experience.
- Serve as the patient's advocate while they are under anesthesia, continuously monitoring their condition.
Intra-Operative Coordination:
- Oversee and coordinate all activities in the operating room from outside the sterile field.
- Manage the flow of supplies, equipment, and medications into the sterile field as needed by the surgical team.
- Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure a smooth and efficient procedure, anticipating their needs and providing necessary resources.
Documentation & Compliance:
- Accurately document all intra-operative nursing care, including patient status, medications administered, and all procedural details.
- Ensure all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts are performed and documented accurately.
- Adhere strictly to all established surgical policies, procedures, and infection control protocols to maintain a sterile environment.
Emergency Response:
- Remain calm and function effectively in emergency situations.
- Continuously monitor the patient and sterile field, and take appropriate action if a problem occurs.
- Maintain current BLS and ACLS certifications and participate in emergency drills.
General Qualifications
Education & Licensure:
- Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Florida.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are required.
Skills & Abilities:
- Proven experience as an OR Nurse with a strong understanding of surgical procedures and sterile technique.
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, surgeons, and the entire surgical team.
- Ability to think critically and make sound clinical decisions under stress.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and move patients and equipment as needed, with or without assistance.
- Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
- Ability to use hands, arms, and legs within the specifications of the job.
