At Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors, Inc., we don’t just build projects — we build life-changing infrastructure. As a privately owned civil contracting firm, we specialize in clearing, grading, underground utilities, roadway, and water/wastewater construction throughout the Southeast.
We’re looking for a motivated Tailman to join our Jacksonville-based team. In this role, you’ll play an essential part in laying pipe for large-scale civil construction projects while gaining the skills and training needed to advance to Pipelayer and beyond.

What You’ll Do
Assist the Pipelayer

Help in the trench with honing pipe, checking grade, and rigging or slinging pipe for placement.

Support layout, alignment, and jointing tasks with precision and safety.
Grow in the Trade

Participate in Petticoat-Schmitt’s training and certification programs for pipelayers.

Learn on the job and advance your knowledge of materials, safety practices, and installation methods.

Step up to lead when needed, keeping work moving efficiently.
Teamwork & Communication

Collaborate with crew members to maintain steady production.

Maintain communication with the Pipelayer, Operator, and Foreman to meet project goals.

Take pride in producing quality work that meets Petticoat-Schmitt standards.
What We’re Looking For
Experience & Skills
-
6+ months of experience as a Hillman or Tailman on a pipe crew.
-
Familiarity with large-diameter pipe installation for water, sewer, or storm systems.
-
Knowledge of rigging, slings, trench work, and grade checking.
-
Willingness to learn and grow within the trade.
Physical Requirements
-
Ability to climb in and out of trenches and work up to 20–30 feet below grade.

Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Lift and move materials up to 50 lbs regularly.

Must have reliable transportation within a 50-mile radius of Jacksonville and surrounding counties (Duval, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns).

Work Schedule
-
Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with overtime as needed.

Workweek: Typically 40 hours; overtime may occur based on project needs.
Requirements

Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.

Must have a valid hard hat, steel-toe boots, orange shirt, and safety vest (required at interview).

Must be able to meet client safety and jobsite requirements.
