Tailman — Build Life-Changing Infrastructure

At Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors, Inc., we don’t just build projects — we build life-changing infrastructure. As a privately owned civil contracting firm, we specialize in clearing, grading, underground utilities, roadway, and water/wastewater construction throughout the Southeast.

We’re looking for a motivated Tailman to join our Jacksonville-based team. In this role, you’ll play an essential part in laying pipe for large-scale civil construction projects while gaining the skills and training needed to advance to Pipelayer and beyond.

If you’re ready to grow, learn, and build a lasting career — this is where it starts.

What You’ll Do

Assist the Pipelayer

  • Help in the trench with honing pipe, checking grade, and rigging or slinging pipe for placement.

  • Support layout, alignment, and jointing tasks with precision and safety.

Grow in the Trade

  • Participate in Petticoat-Schmitt’s training and certification programs for pipelayers.

  • Learn on the job and advance your knowledge of materials, safety practices, and installation methods.

  • Step up to lead when needed, keeping work moving efficiently.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Collaborate with crew members to maintain steady production.

  • Maintain communication with the Pipelayer, Operator, and Foreman to meet project goals.

  • Take pride in producing quality work that meets Petticoat-Schmitt standards.

What We’re Looking For

Experience & Skills

  • 6+ months of experience as a Hillman or Tailman on a pipe crew.

  • Familiarity with large-diameter pipe installation for water, sewer, or storm systems.

  • Knowledge of rigging, slings, trench work, and grade checking.

  • Willingness to learn and grow within the trade.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb in and out of trenches and work up to 20–30 feet below grade.

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Lift and move materials up to 50 lbs regularly.

  • Must have reliable transportation within a 50-mile radius of Jacksonville and surrounding counties (Duval, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns).

Personal Attributes

  • Hardworking, dependable, and self-motivated.

  • Positive attitude and commitment to safety and teamwork.

  • Professional appearance and conduct on all job sites.
