The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture process clearly and courteously, and demonstrating techniques using straight and/or butterfly needles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.
  • Update and maintain patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection methods, such as urine or fecal, in a clear and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Understand and execute all of the physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure 100% accuracy in test requisitions or computer labels.
  • Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures.
  • Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Phlebotomy certification valid for the state of employment as required.
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in patient care, blood draw, venipuncture, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and geriatrics.

Work Environment

The work environment includes working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting, using various technologies and equipment related to phlebotomy. Employees are expected to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and participate in annual department trainings.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Miami, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
