POSITION SUMMARY:
Coordinates and provides care for Neurosurgery patients in the inpatient setting. Provides pre- and post-operative care to patients including teaching of self-care to patients. Acts as a liaison between patient, family members, hospital staff and physicians. Serves as a clinical resource to staff, providing education to enhance patient outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs complete medical history and physical examinations within 24 hours of admission.
- Documents findings of initial work up and formulates patient care plan in collaboration with physicians and nursing staff.
- Initiates and updates problem list.
- Prescribes medications as permitted by law and within the protocols of the unit.
- Initiates diagnostics tests and interprets results within unit protocols.
- Reviews and assesses medical record of the patients in the unit.
- Evaluates urgent matters and confers with attending physician to address them.
- Reviews test results for all unit patients and follows up with attending physicians.
- Maintains a close relationship with Case Management to identify patients with personal and social needs.
- Confers with patient regarding management of acute and chronic conditions.
- Participates in multi-disciplinary rounds in the CVICU unit.
- Ensures compliance with core measures for the service line.
- Ensures compliance with CABG and Valve appropriateness.
- Actively participates in performance improvement activities to positively impact patient outcomes.
- Organizes and provides appropriate learning situations, evaluates outcomes, and follows up.
- Provides educational experiences (i.e. lectures, seminars and demonstrations) for hospital staff and the community.
- Initiates pre-op order set once patient is determined a candidate for Open Heart surgery.
- Keeps surgeon updated on the status of all patients in the service line.
- Promptly follows up treatment plan ordered by surgeon and reports status at the earliest possible opportunity.
- Discontinues chest tubes following unit protocols.
- Initiates early safe discharge planning for unit patients.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- One year (1) clinical experience as ARNP preferred.
- Demonstrates teaching skills for adult learner.
- Excellent physician assessment skills and critical thinking skills.
- Three (3) years of Critical Care experience/CVICU preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership and time management skills.
- Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:
- Education: High School Diploma: MSN from accredited college
- Experience (Type & Length): One (1) year (1) ARNP; three (3) years critical care; CVICU preferred.
- Software/Hardware: Meditech EMR
- License/Certification: Other: Florida ARNP license; BLS certification; ACLS certification
Must clear background and drug test required.
