Position SummaryThe Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality instruction to students with exceptionalities by addressing their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs in alignment with each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This role supports student growth through structured instruction, inclusive practices, and collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Recognize and respond to each student’s unique needs, interests, learning styles, temperament, and cultural background
- Provide academic accommodations and modifications as outlined in IFSPs/IEPs
- Plan and implement curriculum activities that promote social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development
- Teach reading instruction aligned with district pacing guides
- Create weekly lesson plans following MDCPS pacing guidelines
- Establish and maintain a safe, nurturing, and structured classroom environment
- Promote creative thinking, independence, and respect for self and others
- Utilize positive guidance and behavior management strategies consistent with established policies
- Administer required assessments and maintain accurate developmental and academic records
- Maintain attendance and grade records in accordance with school protocols
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, IEP conferences, and in-service trainings
- Collaborate with parents, administrators, social workers, testing specialists, and other stakeholders to develop individualized student plans
- Adapt curriculum materials based on student needs and current best practices
- Understand and implement inclusion policies, emergency procedures, and accident/incident protocols
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students and families at all times
- Demonstrate professional demeanor and maintain a professional appearance
- Back up administrative leadership when assigned and qualified
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support a safe, healthy, and nurturing learning environment
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, or a related field
- Must possess or be eligible for a Florida Professional Educator’s Certificate in Primary/Elementary Education with ESE
- Reading Endorsement and ESOL required (or willingness to enroll and obtain endorsements)
- Completion of Department of Children & Families Child Care Training requirements
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, and internet-based research
- Ability to learn and efficiently use internal databases and computer systems
- Strong organizational skills, including planning, prioritization, and managing multiple deadlines
- Ability to write reports and professional correspondence
- High level of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential information
