As an Optician, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality optical services to a diverse patient population. Working in collaboration with our medical and vision care team, you will ensure every patient receives personalized, compassionate care and the tools they need for optimal vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients in selecting, fitting, and adjusting eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Provide advice on frame styles and lens types based on individual patient needs and preferences.
  • Perform basic eye tests, including visual acuity and pre-testing, under the direction of an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  • Ensure the proper fit and comfort of eyewear, adjusting frames as necessary.
  • Educate patients on the proper care and maintenance of their eyewear.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, including prescription information and any relevant optical data.
  • Work with the healthcare team to ensure smooth coordination of care for patients.
  • Keep the optical area organized and stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Collaborate with optical labs and frame suppliers daily through online platforms and phone communication.
  • Oversee and ensure accuracy in all stages of the lens manufacturing process.
  • Research and interpret vision insurance plans to assist in patient care and product selection.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Optical Expertise: Knowledge of eyeglasses, lenses, and contact lenses, with the ability to interpret prescriptions and adjust eyewear.
  • Patient Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to educate and advise patients on eyewear care and selection, with a patient-centered approach.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using optical equipment, performing eye tests, and ensuring eyewear fit and comfort.
  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy in handling prescriptions, eyewear adjustments, and patient records.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work well with optometrists, ophthalmologists, and other healthcare staff.
  • Organization: Capable of managing inventory, maintaining an orderly work area, and keeping accurate records.
  • Cultural Competency: Ability to provide inclusive care to a diverse patient population, especially in an underserved community.
  • Problem-Solving: Quick and effective resolution of eyewear-related issues and patient concerns.
  • Customer Service: Strong customer service skills to ensure a positive patient experience.
  • Adaptability: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism and accuracy.

Education/Experience:

  • Must be licensed as an optician in the state of Florida; board certification is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of optical equipment, eyeglasses, and contact lenses.
  • Excellent communication skills with a focus on patient care and education.
  • Ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to providing culturally competent and compassionate care.

Physical Demands:

  • Standing and Walking: Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods while assisting patients, adjusting eyewear, or performing tests.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry up to 20-30 pounds, such as optical equipment, frames, or inventory supplies.
  • Dexterity and Manual Skills: Frequent use of hands for adjusting frames, using optical equipment, and handling small tools and materials.
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to see and distinguish fine details for tasks such as measuring prescriptions, adjusting eyewear, and conducting eye tests.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to maintain focus and perform repetitive tasks (e.g., frame adjustments, fitting) throughout the workday.
  • Bending and Stooping: Occasional bending or stooping to access lower shelves or equipment.
