Job Description
The main function of the phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate work areas.
- Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Understand and execute physicians' orders accurately.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
- Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels are correct against script.
- Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures.
- Adhere to procedures necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings and answer telephone inquiries.
- Read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques.
- Experience with patient information data entry and medical terminology.
- Phlebotomy certification required.
- High School diploma.
- Minimum of 2 years experience performing draws on all populations.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced lab environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certified Phlebotomist.
- Experience in customer service within healthcare settings.
Work Environment
The position is based in a reference lab within a small hospital, working alongside a team of six medical technologists and phlebotomists. The role requires wearing scrubs as uniform attire, and the shift timing is to be determined.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
