Job Description

Assistant Chief Building Engineer

Location: St. Petersburg, FL
Schedule: Full-Time, Monday–Friday (with occasional after-hours/emergency support)

About the Role

A large, privately owned corporate campus is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Building Engineer to join its Property & Facilities team. This role helps oversee operations in a Class A office environment and plays a key part in maintaining building systems, supporting the HVAC team, and ensuring a high-quality facility experience.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled building systems professional who is ready to step into a leadership-track role.

Responsibilities

  • Support the HVAC team with expert knowledge of building HVAC systems, including VRF/VRV technology and Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Oversee and perform preventive maintenance for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety, and other building systems.
  • Manage and track work orders, vendor bids, and maintenance proposals.
  • Respond to building emergencies, occasionally requiring after-hours or weekend availability.
  • Monitor building performance and ensure all systems operate efficiently and safely.
  • Work closely with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to ensure seamless facility operations.
  • Utilize digital platforms, apps, and tools for work order and project management.
  • Support campus-wide maintenance initiatives and uphold Class A property standards.

Qualifications

  • Trade school, vocational training, or degree in HVAC, engineering technology, facilities management, or a related field.
  • Advanced expertise in HVAC systems; strong VRF/VRV system experience required.
  • Experience with BMS controls (any platform).
  • Prior experience in a commercial property environment—preferably Class A office, hospitality, healthcare, or large private facilities.
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance programs and multi-system building operations.
  • Ability to review vendor bids, proposals, and work order documentation.
  • Technically savvy; comfortable using apps and digital tools for maintenance management.
  • Excellent communication skills with a team-oriented, no-ego, collaborative attitude.

Ideal Candidate

  • A building systems expert (not a general handyman).
  • Mid-career professional ready to take a step into greater responsibility.
  • Proactive, dependable, organized, and committed to high standards of work.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Full-time, on-site position
  • Monday–Friday (typically 8am–5pm or 9am–6pm)
  • Occasional emergencies may require after-hours, weekend, or holiday response
