Job Description

The University of Miami Health System is initiating a search for a Child Protection Team Physician.


The State of Florida, Department of Health (DOH), contracts with the University of Miami, Department of Pediatrics to provide for a coordinated interdisciplinary team approach for the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of child maltreatment. The Child Protection Team is a Florida-statutory mandated program to assist the Department of Children and Families (DCF) during the investigation of suspected child maltreatment. The CPT is available on a 24-hour basis and provides a unique array of services for over 1,500 children (birth to eighteen) a year in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide forensic medical examinations/consultations and create medical reports for children alleged to have been maltreated (abused and/or neglected)
  • Perform complete physical examinations on referred children
  • Triage cases with CPT case coordinator and provide initial assessment of cases referred to the Team by DCF, law enforcement or medical providers
  • Review the interviews of children and their caregivers prior to examination,
  • Obtain or review the current medical status and the past medical history of the children being examined
  • Order and arrange for indicated imaging and laboratory studies, if necessary,
  • Provide follow-up on hospitalized cases and monitor post-discharge follow-up,
  • Perform sexual abuse examinations, including photographic documentation, as needed
  • Must be available for 24-hour on-call rotation, including weekends and holidays, for triage and emergent medical examinations in the CPT office or in hospitals
  • Determine need for orders and obtain appropriate diagnostic studies (lab tests, procedures, etc.)
  • Assist psychologist in identifying behavioral problems and diagnoses
  • Arrange for outpatient studies or consults as indicated or at the request of the Medical Director
  • Be available to review Hotline reports to determine which cases are mandatory referrals to CPT
  • Remain current on child maltreatment literature and the special medical and psychological needs of foster children, including Florida statutes and DCF/DOH rules and regulations.
  • Provide expert testimony via depositions or court testimony per subpoena; participate in pre- filing and pre-trial conferences as needed
  • This position will be responsible for pediatric medical examinations and consultations, coordinating services, public speaking, and training


Essential Job Requirements:

  • MD/DO required
  • Board eligible or Board-certified pediatrician.
  • Experience in the area of pediatric clinical care
