Job Description

Join an exciting, multidisciplinary PhD program that offers hands-on training from day one, bridging cutting-edge laboratory science with clinical research. We are seeking motivated and dedicated doctoral students for the Neuroscience Ph.D. program at the Roskamp Institute, which currently has openings for a 4-year Ph.D. project in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) research.

Roskamp Institute projects are all focused on translational research, with analysis of clinical samples to define the conditions under investigation, and extensive characterization of relevant preclinical models in order to identify and develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic targets.

This PhD student will join our translational team investigating a brain-penetrant bioactive neurotherapeutic, as an anti-inflammatory treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our research integrates PK/PD modeling, dose optimization, therapeutic time-window analysis and acute-to-chronic efficacy studies in a mouse model of TBI, complemented by cell-based systems that model inducible inflammatory signaling.

Techniques associated with this Roskamp Ph.D. project include:

  • Analysis of rodent and human TBI tissue samples
  • Cell- and tissue-specific isolation and culturing
  • Cre-LoxP and inducible mouse models and CRISPR/Cas9 editing of glial cell cultures
  • Antibody-based analytical approaches - Immunoblotting, ELISA, transactivation assays
  • Rodent manipulation including TBI surgeries, behavioral testing and therapeutic studies.
  • Neuropathological analyses – Microscopy, Immunohistochemistry
  • Mass spectrometry analyses – Kp, uu drug concentration levels in the brain
  • Spatial transcriptomics and proteomics approaches
  • Pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling

The Roskamp Institute is a leader in the field of neuroscience, with a strong reputation for developing novel therapies for conditions such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), Alzheimer’s disease and Gulf War Illness. The Institute’s cutting-edge research environment offers unmatched opportunities for multidisciplinary training and hands-on experience, working with experts in translational neuroscience.

Sarasota, Florida, is known for its beautiful, pristine beaches and pleasant weather year-round, making it an ideal place to live and work. As part of the Roskamp Institute, you will not only advance your career but also enjoy the benefits of living in a vibrant coastal community.
