Job Summary
The Utility Field Technician I supports the towns water and sewer systems by performing entry-level maintenance, repair, and inspection tasks. This position is responsible for assisting with underground utility marking, responding to service requests, conducting routine system maintenance, and ensuring accurate meter readings. The technician learns and applies safety procedures, regulatory compliance, and best practices in water and wastewater operations, while gaining experience to progress to more advanced roles.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other related duties as assigned):
Assist with identifying and marking underground utilities to prevent damage during excavation and construction, ensuring public safety and infrastructure protection.
Support the resolution of water and sewer complaints by conducting basic inspections and reporting findings to senior technicians for further action.
Read and record water meter readings accurately for billing purposes and assist with service turn on/off requests to maintain customer satisfaction.
Perform routine maintenance on water and sewer infrastructure, including meters, valves, and hydrants, to maintain system reliability and public health.
Respond to work orders and support senior technicians in emergency repairs to ensure continuity of water services and prompt resolution of issues.
Participate in water main flushing and routine system checks to maintain water quality and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Maintain and inventory parts and tools, ensuring readiness for maintenance tasks and repairs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Basic principles of water distribution and sewer collection systems.
- Safety protocols and regulatory requirements in water and wastewater operations.
- Procedures for reading and maintaining water meters and valves.
- Skill to:
- Operate basic equipment used in water and sewer system maintenance.
- Accurately read and record meter data.
- Assist in troubleshooting and resolving basic issues in water and sewer systems.

Follow instructions and safety guidelines while performing maintenance tasks.

Learn and apply regulatory standards and operational procedures.
Work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical labor.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and meter readings.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
One (1) year of experience in maintenance or construction, preferably related to water and wastewater systems.
Ability to obtain Water Distribution Level 3 certification within one (1) year of appointment.
Possession of a current and valid Florida drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Possession of a current and valid commercial driver's license (CDL).
Certification in Confined Space Entry and Hazardous Materials Handling.
Experience with GIS mapping technology or related software.
