SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) and Quality Management (QM) are often used together, especially when dealing with the maintenance and calibration of equipment that requires quality checks. PM focuses on managing maintenance activities, while QM handles quality inspections and processes. Integrating the two allows for a more comprehensive approach to equipment management, ensuring both functionality and quality standards are met.
Here's why they are often used together:
Test Equipment Management:
Many companies need to maintain and calibrate their test equipment to ensure it meets performance criteria. SAP QM's Test Equipment Management component, integrated with PM, allows for managing equipment data, planning and scheduling inspections, and recording results.
Calibration Inspections:
PM orders, especially those for calibration, can be linked to QM to generate inspection lots automatically when the order is released. This allows for recording results, valuation, and making usage decisions within the QM module.
Preventive and Predictive Maintenance:
When PM is used for routine or preventive maintenance, integrating with QM allows for quality checks on equipment to ensure it meets specific standards. This ensures that maintenance activities not only keep equipment running but also maintain its quality and performance.
Inspection Lots:
QM inspection lots can be created to initiate quality checks on equipment or functional locations during maintenance. This ensures that any potential issues found during maintenance are documented and addressed within the QM framework.
Data Integration:
PM provides the data about maintenance activities, and QM utilizes this data for further analysis and quality control. This integration enables a holistic view of equipment performance and quality.
Corrective Actions:
If a quality issue is detected during a maintenance activity, the integration between PM and QM allows for initiating corrective actions and preventing future occurrences.
In essence, the integration of PM and QM provides a structured way to manage maintenance activities while simultaneously ensuring that the maintained equipment meets the required quality standards. This leads to improved equipment reliability, reduced operational risks, and optimized maintenance costs.
