Position Summary:
The Bench Chemist will support the Research & Development team by performing laboratory testing, formula adjustments, and product qualification activities for coatings and paint products. This role requires a hands-on chemist with strong technical and analytical skills, as well as the ability to document and manage data using Oracle ERP and other software tools. The Bench Chemist will be responsible for product improvement, new product development, and quality assurance tasks through consistent lab work and accurate recordkeeping.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct laboratory testing of raw materials, intermediates, and finished paint products to support product development and qualification.
- Assist in formulation adjustments, scale-up activities, and performance evaluations for paints, primers, and coatings.
- Record, analyze, and interpret test data to support R&D decisions and product improvements.
- Perform physical, chemical, and performance property testing (e.g., viscosity, color, gloss, adhesion, durability).
- Document formulas, test results, and product qualifications in compliance with company standards.
- Enter, track, and maintain formulation, testing, and product data in Oracle ERP.
- Product performance testing such as QUV, Salt Fog, Adhesion, etc., utilizing in-house capabilities for testing, evaluating, and reporting to ensure product consistency and long-term durability.
- Manages and coordinates any third-party vendor testing that is required for performance.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, safety standards, and procedures.
- Collaborate closely with R&D chemists, technical staff, and cross-functional teams to achieve project goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
- 1–3 years of laboratory experience in paints, coatings, or chemical manufacturing environment preferred.
- Strong knowledge of formulation principles, raw materials, and testing methods for coatings.
- Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation and standard test procedures (ASTM, ISO, etc.).
- Experience with Oracle ERP (preferred) or similar systems for formula management, testing, and product data entry.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized testing protocols.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Work Environment:
- Laboratory-based, with occasional communication with production.
- Requires use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols in a chemical laboratory environment.
