Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or Special Education, Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS), and 1+ years Orientation and Mobility Specialist experience required. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
A K-12 school in Cape Coral, FL is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to support students with visual impairments by developing their ability to navigate safely and independently. This contract position runs for the current school year (CSY).
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess students orientation and mobility needs
- Implement strategies and training to improve students independent travel skills
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to create individualized education plans (IEPs)
- Provide direct instruction using specialized mobility techniques and tools
- Monitor and document student progress regularly
- Conduct ongoing evaluations and adjust interventions as needed
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to services for visually impaired students
Desired Qualifications:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
- Experience working with K-12 students with visual impairments
- Knowledge of instructional techniques for orientation and mobility training
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently within a contract role
