Horticulturist / Landscape Manager

Summary: The Horticulturist / Landscape Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of landscape maintenance and enhancement across a 260-acre, high-end private golf club, including 15 acres of formal landscape beds, 35 acres of upland preserves, patio and indoor plantings, and an extensive collection of tropical and subtropical plant material.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Develops and implements a year-round maintenance program, including pruning schedules, fertilization, pest and disease management, and seasonal planting.

Maintains high aesthetic and horticultural standards suitable for a luxury environment.

Leads, supervises, counsels and trains a team of 4–8 landscape crew members.

Coordinates daily assignments, prioritizes tasks, and ensures timely completion of work.

Provides ongoing training and guidance to staff to ensure work is completed to high standards.

Assists with interviewing potential candidates and provides input for hires.

Maintains a diverse collection of plant material, including but not limited to native species, ornamentals, palms and trees.

Oversees the care of annual flower beds, container plants, patio displays, and over 2.5 miles of ficus hedges.

Schedules and applies fertilizers and approved pesticides/herbicides in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Maintains accurate records of applications and monitors effectiveness.

Works closely with the Director of Agronomy to align horticultural practices with overall property standards and goals.

Communicates proactively with other departments to coordinate special events, seasonal displays, and club member needs.

Assists in the stewardship of 35 acres of upland preserve areas, maintaining ecological integrity and appearance.

Ensures that all staff adhere to safety protocols and that the course complies with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.

Adheres to and enforces all Club policies and safety protocols.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises up to 8 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; monitoring performance and providing input for appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Florida Pesticide Application Certification preferred andValid Driver’s License with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR).

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, guests, members and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: - Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software, Spreadsheet software, Project Management software and Inventory software.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee is required to have good vision in order to operate equipment effectively.
