Salary Range: $19-$21

Position Overview:
The Verification of Benefits (VOB) Specialist – Substance Abuse & Mental Health is responsible for contacting multiple payors to obtain detailed and accurate insurance benefit information for clients seeking behavioral health and substance use treatment. This includes identifying plan restrictions, exclusions, authorization requirements, CPT and revenue code coverage, and any benefit details relevant to the facility and level of care. The specialist will document findings, and ensure thorough, timely benefit verification that supports intake, admission, and billing processes.
This role requires extensive phone communication with insurance companies, in-depth research using payer portals (e.g., Availity, VerifyTX), and the ability to challenge inaccurate or misquoted information. Accuracy, persistence, and strong communication are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contact multiple payors by phone to obtain detailed benefit information for all behavioral health and substance use levels of care.
- Validate and correct demographic and insurance information
- Research plan details on payer portals (e.g., Availity, VerifyTX) and document benefit structures, restrictions, exclusions, and license requirements.
- Verify CPT and revenue code coverage related to substance abuse and mental health services.
- Identify and document any plan limitations, authorization requirements, medical necessity criteria, and network nuances.
- Enter insurance benefits data into CRM (e.g., Salesforce), including copay, coinsurance, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximums
- Report new or changing payor requirements to leadership and collaborate with internal teams.
- Support special projects and perform other duties as required
Qualifications:
Minimum Education/Certifications/OTJ Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in insurance benefits verification, preferably in behavioral health or substance abuse treatment
Knowledge of Subject Matter:
- Understanding of insurance benefit structures and verification procedures
- Familiarity with payer phone systems and behavioral health/substance abuse benefits
Skills:
- Strong understanding of insurance benefit structures, verification procedures, and payor terminology.
- Familiarity with behavioral health and substance use treatment benefits, authorization processes, and plan-specific restrictions.
- Knowledge of CPT codes, revenue codes, and general insurance billing concepts.
- Understanding of facility license requirements and how they impact coverage
Abilities/Attributes:
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks
- Patience and professionalism in interactions with staff and clients
- Experience with detox, mental health, or addiction treatment billing preferred
