THE ROLE

The Upper School Robotics Teacher is a passionate, student-centered educator who plays a key role in strengthening our robotics and engineering program across grades 6–12. This teacher will design and teach both introductory and advanced robotics and engineering courses, while also serving as a lead contributor to our competitive robotics programs, including FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC).

The ideal candidate is first and foremost an exceptional classroom teacher—an enthusiastic pedagogue who fosters deep thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and perseverance through hands-on, inquiry-driven instruction.

Related duties shall be those guided by the NBPS mission and vision and those assigned by the administrative leadership team.

Curriculum Development and Instruction

The Upper School Robotics Teacher will:

  • Design and implement vertically aligned introductory and advanced robotics and engineering courses for grades 6–12.

  • Teach students foundational and advanced concepts in: Robotics and automation; Mechanical systems and fabrication; Electronics and circuitry; Programming and control systems
  • Demonstrate fluency in both hardware and software environments to support full-system robotics learning.
  • Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learners, including beginners and advanced students, English language learners, and students with mild specific learning disabilities.
  • Use backwards planning and assessment-driven instruction to monitor student growth, provide meaningful feedback, and promote mastery.
  • Connect engineering practices to authentic real-world challenges that emphasize purposeful design, systems thinking, and innovation.

Competitive Robotics and Extracurricular Leadership

The Upper School Robotics Teacher will:

  • Lead and support NBPS competitive robotics teams competing in both FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)
  • Prepare students for all phases of competitive robotics, including: Robot design, build, wiring, and testing; Programming and controls; Strategy, scouting, and match analysis; Documentation, judging, and presentation
  • Foster a team culture grounded in inclusion, perseverance, personal responsibility, innovation, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Support after-school practices, weekend competitions, and related events as part of the robotics season.

Program Development and Collaboration

The Upper School Robotics Teacher will:

  • Contribute to the strategic growth and long-term vision of the 6–12 robotics and engineering program.
  • Collaborate with faculty to strengthen interdisciplinary learning connections.
  • Support recruitment and retention of students into robotics and engineering pathways.
  • Participate in department meetings and curriculum alignment work.
  • Help maintain lab safety standards, equipment organization, and responsible use of materials and tools.

Professional Responsibilities and Growth

The Upper School Robotics Teacher will:

Communicate with Impact

  • Communicate openly, clearly, and with kindness with students, families, and colleagues to build trust and support student growth.
  • Foster a classroom and team culture where student voice, curiosity, and idea-sharing are actively encouraged.

Collaborate with Empathy

  • Work as a collaborative team member within the Technology department to support shared goals for student learning.
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness, inclusivity, and self-awareness in interactions with students and colleagues to ensure all feel welcomed, valued, and supported.

Make Considered Decisions

  • Use student data, performance evidence, and reflective practice to inform instructional decisions, team structures, and program development.
  • Act with integrity and sound professional judgment in all instructional, technological, and co-curricular decision-making.

Embrace Change

  • Adapt teaching practice, curriculum, and team structures in response to evolving technologies, student needs, and program growth.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and a solutions-oriented mindset when navigating ambiguity and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Engineering, Robotics, Education, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Recognized teaching qualification and prior secondary teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with or strong familiarity with: FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and/or FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC); Robotics platforms, sensors, motors, controllers, and fabrication tools; Programming languages and environments used in robotics (e.g., Python, Java, C-based languages)
  • Creative approach to instruction and engineering problem solving.
  • Highly effective communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

ABOUT YOU

You are an enthusiastic educator and builder of programs, equally energized by teaching students in the classroom and supporting them in competitive, real-world applications of engineering. You are reflective about your practice, eager to grow, and motivated by the challenge of helping students persist through complex problems.

You thrive in collaborative environments, communicate with confidence, and build strong relationships with students and families. You are excited to help shape the future of a 6–12 robotics pipeline and contribute meaningfully to a mission-driven, future-focused school community. You should be eligible to work in the USA.
