We are seeking Coax Splicers whoare responsible for maintaining and repairing Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) systems. Duties include coax cable splicing, system installation and activation, troubleshooting signal issues, and performing preventative maintenance. The role involves balancing forward and return paths using test equipment, maintaining plant infrastructure, and ensuring optimal network performance.
Responsibilities
- Interpret schematics and design drawings to perform splicing, activation, and testing of HFC outside plant infrastructure for both new construction and legacy systems.
- Upgrade hardware and infrastructure, including comprehensive plant documentation and installation of HFC active and passive components such as nodes, amplifiers, line extenders, taps, splitters, and power supplies. Accurately document detailed field notes, operate a bucket truck, access network enclosures and nodes, and utilize various testing equipment for system verification.
- Responsibilities are distributed across hardline coaxial splicing, system sweeping, and network activation activities.
- Install fiber optic enclosures, nodes, and related equipment as necessary.
- Work with customers, subcontractors, and other team members in the field to define, collect, and determine information from customers and customer facilities for project requirements.
- Conduct DOCSIS 3.1 testing and evaluations, perform targeted system sweeps, accurately document findings, and compile system data to generate comprehensive technical reports.
- Diagnose and resolve plant-related issues to mitigate upstream noise and forward path impairments within the cable system. Utilize standard outside plant (OSP) tools, including Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs), Time Domain Reflectometers (TDRs), light meters, and signal strength meters, to ensure optimal system performance.
- Ability to understand and calculate system Radio Frequency (RF) signals to quickly make necessary adjustments to resolve issues and report accurate information to project supervisors.
- Understanding the project's Statement of Work (SOW) and escalation process for deviations.
- Report accurate daily project updates for productivity tracking and project billing.
- Define, develop, and share technical knowledge and stay current on technical advancements.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- 1-3 years’ experience splicing hardline distribution coax is required.
- 1-3 years’ experience in a HFC Sweep/Technician role within the Service Provider space, or similar, is required.
- Must have experience performing production upgrades in a CATV OSP environment, with demonstrated proficiency in system troubleshooting.
- Must have experience splicing optical nodes, amplifiers, line extenders, taps, splitters, power supplies in both aerial and underground locations.
- Proficient in the use of TDR test equipment, cable locators, signal level meters, and standard hand tools for outside plant operations. Experienced with a range of test equipment, including but not limited to: Viavi SCU 1800 sweep generator, Viavi OneExpert ONX-630, Viavi DSP TDR, OTDR, volt-ohm meters (VOM), and light meters.
- Possesses in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with Viavi/JDSU equipment for both sweeping and DOCSIS testing applications.
- General understanding of HFC headend networks and optical systems (forward and return paths), along with foundational knowledge of CMTS, FTTx architectures, and ISP operations.
- Ability to maintain accurate record keeping, reporting, and great attention to detail.
- Able to read and understand plant maps for CATV system designs.
- Technical certification from SCTE, NCTI, or similar field training is preferred.
- Consulting background and experience working with multiple customers is preferred.
- Experience setting up and optimizing new optical node locations is preferred.
- Bucket truck and safety certifications are preferred.
- Able to work independently on projects and take direction from teammates and develop skills to advance professionally.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Capable of following directions and adhering to strict deadlines.

Shift is Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and/or 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. CST but must be able to work outside normal business hours when required for system maintenance and subscriber outages.
Additional information
- Approximately 75% nationwide travel is required, typically 16 days on-site and 5 days off at home.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Must be able to pass a DOT Medical Examination to obtain and maintain a DOT Commercial Motor Vehicle Certification.
