Shift/Time Zone: 10:00 PM - 8:30 AM

Histotechnologist – Job Responsibilities

The Histotechnologist is responsible for performing routine and non-routine histology procedures related to the preparation of tissue slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists, in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures. This role requires the ability to perform all duties of a Histotechnician I and II while ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform accessioning and accurate labeling of all tissue specimens.
  • Process and manage paperwork related to specimen accessioning and diagnostic reporting.
  • Ensure proper tissue processing, embedding, and paraffin block preparation.
  • Perform microtomy on embedded tissue specimens.
  • Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining.
  • Perform manual or automated coverslipping of stained slides.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for special stain procedures.
  • Obtain, validate, and document appropriate tissue controls for special stains.
  • Perform all special stain procedures according to laboratory protocols.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for Immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures, as needed.
  • Obtain, validate, and document control materials for IHC testing.
  • Perform IHC testing when required.
  • File and organize completed tissue blocks and slides.
  • Conduct routine equipment maintenance and cleaning.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions and document corrective actions, including repairs or repeat testing.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of quality control and remedial activities.
  • Provide training, guidance, and support to Histotechnicians, students, and laboratory aides.
  • Adhere to laboratory quality control, quality assurance, and safety policies.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Previous histotechnology experience required.
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in a related field.
  • ASCP Histotechnician (HT) certification required.
