Career Development Instructor
Operation New Hope is a nonprofit operating in Jacksonville, Orlando, St. Johns County, the Space Coast, and soon to open in the Tampa/St. Pete area. Our pre-release and post-release programs provide job training and placement, and comprehensive support services to people returning from incarceration and others who have been affected by the justice system with the goal of facilitating successful transitions back into the community. We motivate our clients to become productive, responsible citizens, and our programs help prevent recidivism, reduce the repeated costs of incarceration, and improve public safety. Our dedicated team supports the career opportunities, mental health, and overall stability of our clients to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
Position Overview: The Career Development Instructor delivers and coordinates two to four weeks of soft skills and job readiness training for our Ready4Work Clients. During the two to four weeks of training, clients must complete soft skill modules, participate in a mock interview, and complete a reading and math assessment, all of which is overseen by the Career Development Team.
Reports to: Workforce Development Manager
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans and conducts an instructional program based on assessment data, knowledge of the teaching strategies, learning styles and the availability of resources. Must select appropriate teaching techniques, which may include individual guidance, peer tutoring, cooperative learning, media instruction, computerized instruction, and small group instruction or behavior modification.
- Provides input for the design, development, and implementation of curricula to meet the diverse learning needs of the Clients. This may require writing original curricula rather than modifying existing curricula to meet the learning needs and demographic characteristics of the Clients.
- Identifies and describes client behavior/attendance issues that need to be addressed with case management, employment services, and mental health teams, which may hamper the educational progress and completion of career development training.
- Collaborates with the Employment Services team to coordinate certified vocational training to increase educational and skill level of Clients.
- Collaborates with Case Management and Mental Health to assure consistent feedback around Client progression.
- Coordinates with Community Partners to deliver additional services to Clients such as: legal services and budget training.
- Reports and Correspondence
- Responsible for the professional preparation of reports, memoranda, and other letters.
- Accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of data: Review all reports for accuracy and timeliness.
- Coordinates the delivery of client lunches.
- Coordinates and conducts a weekly client graduation for those who complete all Career Development requirements.
- May administer drug tests as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education / Experience / Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required or 4 years direct experience delivering soft skills training to adults.
- At least 4 years’ experience in workforce development or adult education. No candidates will be considered without adult training experience.
- At least 2 years’ experience working with marginalized or underserved populations.
- Experience in the development of adult education and/or workforce development curricula.
- Knowledge of diagnostic and achievement testing procedures and practices.
- Special consideration will be granted to applicants that are certified to administer the TABE test.
- Must be flexible and adaptable to consider all points of view and work toward decisions that reflect the greater good of the organization.
- Strong influential face-to-face communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
- Comfortable using computers, running reports, and learning new software.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and electronic client records.
- Must be able to work Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.
- Must be able to clear a Level I Background check through the Department of Corrections.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
